I made some healing art. It nourished my soul and calmed my mind..
Aren’t I lucky.
So lucky to have the window open and hear my daughter come home from school singing.
Even luckier to hear her moan that
there is nothing to eat in the house. Because I know this is a lie.

Day 11. #onelittlething100
I was inspired to make some marks from a rusty bit of metal I saw today. An abstract image on wood that turned into an idea. I’m not finished but my project is not about finished art, it’s about doing something daily that feeds my creativity. And this was the tonic.

I went for a walk with my daughter at dusk and the light was beautiful and I am enjoying spending more time with my family now we are officially on Summer Break.
I had an urge to capture this memory and feeling and it was nice to have the time to paint.

Day 3 of #onelittlething100.
I tidied my desk and found my Bologna Sketchbook and decided to draw the fabulous guardian -of -the -Keyhole. It reminds me of The pair of door Knockers from Labyrinth (one of my favourite films ever). Process took over and he became something else that I didn’t realise I needed until now. A bit of a rushed one tonight. But again, always worth it as it feels good.

So I’m doing a 100 day project. It’s called #onelittlething100.
.
Yeah- it’s a commitment. But this project is different. Each day I plan to take time out to do one little thing that will nurture my creativity.
That might be:
drawing (obviously), writing, photography, a walk, going to a gallery, mark making in my sketchbook, noticing the world, looking at colours, reading or finding inspiration in unusual places or making art for the sheer joy of it.

Perhaps in the threat of an AI takeover I’m trying to bring the art of authenticity back.
I’m not hoping this will be a viral success and I hope to share as often as I can. If not here then on substack.
.
This project is completely spontaneous and I might regret the commitment to Instagram but I won’t regret the commitment to myself. Perhaps the accountability may help me? Maybe it’ll hinder. All I know is I will be delving deeper into my creative self in an aid to be honest and truthful about what matters to me. To find the art in being myself, and Sharing how I see the world- I’d like to see how you see it too, so please join in if you like.

Day one- a walk with my dog. I hadn’t noticed spring had arrived as I have had my head in books for weeks, and the bluebells were spectacular. So this could have been enough because I felt peaceful and connected after a stressful few days. But I decided to find a little joy in some ink today as well.

Who knows what tomorrow will bring.

I went to the lovely @buttercupsgoats to draw there goats!! I love how different they all are.
Sitting in the sunshine, drawing whilst cuddling goats is pure therapy.
We are so lucky to have this incredible sanctuary up the road, they do such amazing work.

It’s a funny coincidence that I married a Peter & we have a goat sanctuary up the road. 😂

The months are flying by….how is it March tomorrow?
We spent a day at our favourite place. There’s something special about a sunny winters day. It’s an unexpected bonus to a dark February. I’m also feeling contemplative about spending time with my (not so little) kids, I’m very aware that they are growing so fast and I want to hold onto these years for much longer than I know is possible.

My name is Heidi @heidi_griffiths_art and this is day 2 of my @goodshipillustration take over. Where I will tell you about my illustration journey so far.

When my youngest started school I suddenly gained a lot more time. I gave myself a year to build a children’s book portfolio & to create my website. (That I don’t update as much as I should)
My initial portfolio of children’s book work contained work I thought publishers wanted to see.
Ive dug deep into the archives to find this work to show you and it feels quite uncomfortable looking at old work let alone showing it to thousands of people.
Looking back helps me to see how I have developed. It’s all part of my journey so far and I’m pleased I never gave up.

It was around this time that I got an iPad to draw on.
It seemed that everyone had one at the time, and I felt that perhaps the only way to be a professional illustrator was to produce art digitally. I had fun experimenting with digital
Brushes that looked so incredibly analog.
One thing that the iPad increased in me though was mr perfectionist nature, it was too easy to zoom in and stress over every little detail.

And then as if by magic…..✨
I got offered my very first children’s book work with Bloomsbury Publishing.

I cannot tell you how I jumped around the room with excitement. For a girl who never thought she was good enough to then be wanted by a major uk publisher was a dream come true.

March 2020 was a time we will
Never forget. It was the month I started work on ‘Grow, Forage & Make’, the month my children were sent home from school, and the month we were all isolated from our family and friends.

The Old Neptune pub in Whitstable is an iconic building. Used as a mortuary after a great storm and then was swept away completely after another storm the following year. Thankfully there were no storms yesterday.

I’ve been taking photos of all the insects that enter our bathroom via the open window. They are pretty cool close up. Also iPhotos will name the species for you too, and they have some very majestic sounding Latin names.

Today marks the first day of my new year. The beginning of another journey around the sun.
A new month & almost a new season.
Ive been contemplating my year and planning for the next. I had a great day yesterday; visiting Hastings Contemporary’s Quentin Blake exhibition, junk shops, old bookshops and drinking great coffee.

Thoughts on getting older from my notes;

I like the freedom that I’ve found with age.
More resilience which means not giving as many f*cks as I did when I was younger.
Less fear and more freedom is good for me and good for my art.

Something that is not observational drawing. ☀️
Don’t get me wrong, I love observational drawing. It’s just nice to be in your own little world sometimes isn’t it?

I made this a few years ago for a project that didn’t go ahead. I was steered in a different direction. I thought I disliked it, but I now appreciate the experimental approach. Whenever I feel negative about a piece of art I ask myself; Do I not like it because I’ve not seen it before? Perhaps You’ve not seen art like this in children’s books, but does that make it bad? Who knows?? It could be genius.
It doesn’t have to look like all the other work out there to be good.👍

It’s hard to gauge, but if there is something you like about it, then; I think that’s a sign you’re going in the right direction. 😀

Don’t get me wrong, I love observational drawing. It’s just nice to be in your own little world sometimes isn’t it?

I made this a few years ago for a project that didn’t go ahead. I was steered in a different direction. I thought I disliked it, but I now appreciate the experimental approach. Whenever I feel negative about a piece of art I ask myself; Do I not like it because I’ve not seen it before? Perhaps You’ve not seen art like this in children’s books, but does that make it bad? I’m trying to record the dogs and humans I meet on my walks. The conversations that we have usually dive straight into deep meaningful conversations about life. A fleeting interaction that often leave me thinking deeper about life. Yet I never know the humans names. Only the dogs.

This is a true story of my childhood.

My entry into the @picturehooks competition, ‘Ready, Steady…Go’

If you’ve not heard about picture hooks then they are a fabulous organisation that supports emerging picture book illustrators. And there is nothing like a deadline to get work done.

Although I have illustrated a few picture books I still class myself as ‘emerging’. The way in which I approach artwork has completely changed this year.
I made these images using printing techniques I learned in the print room.

My entry into the @picturehooks competition, ‘Ready, Steady…Go’

If you’ve not heard about picture hooks then they are a fabulous organisation that supports emerging picture book illustrators. And there is nothing like a deadline to get work done.

Although I have illustrated a few picture books I still class myself as ‘emerging’. The way in which I approach artwork has completely changed this year.
I made these images using printing techniques I learned in the print room.

It has been soooo Freeing to play with techniques.

I felt that I had little creative breakthroughs when making these, in colour, textures & observation. I should now show you my Sketchbook ‘fails’ because for every win there has to be at least 10 fails. Good or bad art is still art. Edging you further along the creative path.

A sketchbook can be whatever you need it to be.
For me that’s pencil drawings & paintings , finished and unfinished. Notes and colour swatches observation and imagination. It’s one big experiment and response to the world around me but also mindless scribbling when I’m on the phone.

A few weeks ago I went to the #frygallery to see the exhibition ‘Working Woman’.
🖼️ 🖼️ 🖼️
The Fry Gallery in Saffron Walden holds a stunning collection of work from a group of artists who all resided in Great Barfield in the mid century. There must have been some sort of weird magic around this village to inspire such artists.
.
I particularly love the work of Sheila Robinson. Her combination of colours with various techniques of print making feel so energetic and alive.
.
Whilst admiring her work, I was introduced to a neighbour of Sheila’s who told me about her work and how she would make her art in the kitchen, using her feet as a press in amongst juggling her children’s needs as a single parent.
.
I understand the juggle, the complexity of guilt as an artist and mother. Doing what you can with what you have. And making art work because it has to.
.
I left feeling like I knew her. She has inspired me immensely.
.

I went to the New Forest on a fleeting visit with family.
🌳🌳🌳
I did some observational drawing. However not all my paintings were done on location. Some were done by memory. I remember the colours and textures particularly; the violet haze across the heathland of heather and the prickly yellow gorse in bloom. I also remember the funny stories and adventures that were had.

It’s easy for me to visualise this place as we go to The New Forest often. I have happy memories of childhood holidays there, and we now have memories of our own children exploring the forest.

Being present and soaking up experiences and taking time to notice the little things is important to me. Sometimes more important than stopping to paint for an hour.

When time is tight I try to just jot down a few notes and do some really bad drawing’s. My sketch books are a mixture of quick sketches, unfinished drawings, notes and paintings.
